The box-office flop is defined as a film which is considered highly unsuccessful or unprofitable during the theatrical run. A commercial success of a film is a priority for everyone who is directly or indirectly connected to the Bollywood Industry. The quality of work should be given importance as all the fresh releases have gone ahead with the OTT option in the post Corona Virus world. Though movies switching to the Amazon and Netflix have helped the mainstream cinema reach the masses but OTT cannot measure the monetary gains of the creative piece.
Bollywood industry has only one medium to connect with the audience- Films. The makers want to get involved in cinematic projects which are liked by the critics as well the public. This can be achieved mainly by a strong content, storyline and well written characters but some of the directors want the financial success by just casting stars in the film.
In the lockdown every industry has to go through losses. Bollywood had a fair share of flops. Most movies were good as it was a content rich film but without any big names associated with them. These movies tend to go unrecognized because promotions weren’t planned properly; a big budget movie gets the entire buzz overshadowing it. The content is beyond the understanding of the target audience set for the particular movie. There is a set of viewers for every genre of the film. It is just all about the appeal of the movie in term of plot and engagement. In modern times content is key to the money grabbing technique at the Box-office.
There are few factors that should be kept in mind when it comes to failures and tackling them:
- Success and Failures cannot be judged on the basis of popularity. More screens should be given to those who have made a film with a good concept rather than those trying to sell their mindless films with the power of big names.
- Audience is pulled towards the cinema hall with all the big names in the industry. The viewers should also give a chance to the outsiders as well. I feel Sushant Singh Rajput could have survived in Bollywood industry for a longer period if he had more powerful support system than what he got.
- Can producers be held accountable for giving money to only big budget movies with well known stars rather than fresh faces.
- Are Star kids to be blamed for the paparazzi being obsessed with them from the time they are born or being able to afford the best marketing and PR team even before they are launched in the showbiz industry.
- Filmmakers with a good content yet a small budget struggle to opt for all the machineries required to make a particular film a hit or flop.
