Bollywood is the word made from the culmination of two words Bombay and Hollywood. Bollywood tries to justify its origins by taking inspiration from the Hollywood industry with zero inputs from the creative teams the films being made. The Indian filmmakers tend to add some melodious songs, dance, romance and drama to spice up the story for the desi audience.
Some Bollywood flicks who only take real inspiration and only the idea is on the same lines as the English movie and this is to extent okay but the ones who replicate it in entirety is not healthy. The only positive in such copy paste formula is that audience gets all curious to watch the original masterpiece and then draws all sorts of comparisons between the two.
Here is the list of Bollywood movies inspired from the Hollywood movies:
- Bazigar (1993) –Kiss before dying (1991): Both of these films have the same narrative. Bazigar marks the debut of Shilpa Shetty Kundra and also Sharukh and Kajol were cast together for the first time. The pairing became an iconic one on the big screen and is going strong even today.
- Murder (2004)- Unfaithful(2002): The film murder never mentioned the fact that its concept was taken from the 2002 movie. Though the Emran Hashmi starrer was a hit, many consider Unfaithful to be a better made product.
- Dushmann (1998)-Eye for an Eye (1996): Dushmann is the remake of Eye for an Eye with a slight change that the protagonist is looking for justice for her sister in the Hindi version and not daughter. I have watched Dushmann 2 -3 times for performances from Kajol and the Villain of the film Ashitoush Rana. Both the actors were outstanding in their respective roles.
- Baghban (2003) – Make way for tomorrow (1937): Both the films deal with relationship between the parents and their children. The bitterness that arises due to gap between the two generations.
- Murder 2(2011) – The chaser (2008): This movie was loved by the audience as it highlighted the real picture of the crime against women.
- Judwa (1997) – Twin Dragon (1992): Both films follow the exact plot. Judwa the Hindi version was remade again with the same name with Varun Dhawan. The original Judwa was a bad version of Twin Dragon then I don’t find any logic in remaking it again in modern times.
- Mohabbatien (2002) –Dead poets Society(1989): The film before the interval is the exact same of the original movie apart from the masala added to make it qualified as a typical commercial movie.
- Jism (2003) – Body heat (1981): The title is the literal translation of Body heat. We can understand the degree of inspiration the movie. Jism became popular amidst the Indian audience because the makers had casted the hottest pair in the Bollywood industry at that time.
- Ek Villain (2014) – I saw the Devil (2010): For me the highlight of the Indian remake was Ritesh Deshmukh who plays the role of the antagonist was flawless. It coming from Ritesh was unexpected and therefore it was even scarier.
- Munna Bhai MBBS (2003) –Patch Adam (1998): Munna bhai is one movie that never fails to entertain us. I would love to watch the original to see what more it has to offer.
- Bunty aur Babli (2005) –Bonnie Clyde (1967) both follow the same storyline. I loved the pairing of Abhishek and Rani in early times. Amitabh and Aishwariya Rai Bachhan was hidden gift for the masses.
- Nishabd (2007) – Lolita (1962): The story is about the obsession of a middle aged person to a teen age girl. I have mentioned this movie in my list as a tribute to the beautiful actress Jiya Khan.
