Chhapaak is based on true events. It does not follow a linear graph and just gives the audience a glimpse of the actual incident in the two flashbacks. The movie shows the struggles of Malti after the attack and not only the attack as the people are already aware of the attack through the news.
The very first scene of the movie raises the question “Why Rapes are considered more important than any other crime”. All types of crimes should be given equal importance and Justice.
Talking about the performances Deepika Padukone has done a good job portraying all the emotions of Malti- an acid attack survivor but I as an audience was constantly reminded of the fact that it was Deepika and not Malti. The director/ writer Gulzar fails to be able to merge the two in my head and so in some portion of the narrative, I felt disconnected.
On the other hand, Vikrant Massey plays Amol who is more relatable as the male lead. I could sense the simplicity as well as the helplessness as he couldn’t give her the salary but also wants her to work for him as it would be beneficial for his NGO.
All the songs were good but the one song that stayed with me and also reflects the mood of the movie is the title track- Chhapaak. It helps the audience to walk away with an emotional contact with the film. The film director Meghna Gulzaar manages to achieve what she is aiming at for a little while but not in its entirety.
