In early days of the industry, the devils were stereotyped a little more so that the fear factor is intrigued in the audience. In the modern era, the villain is very much a part of society and it becomes a difficult task to be able to pinpoint and say for certain that he is the one who people should stay away from.
The performances that stood out for me was Ashitoush Rana in Sangarsh & Dushman along with Sadashiv Amrapurkar in Sadak. Lajja Shankar and Gokul Pandit are both having a similar mindset yet different
personalities. These characters justify their actions in the name of god while Maharani blames it on her fate for doing all the evil deeds and wants the men and women to suffer similarly as she did for being transgender.
Rana and Amrapurkar take a huge risk in the early times choosing characters no one wanted to play as cinema wasn’t evolved at the time. These negative roles are remembered by the viewers at some point as it has managed to overpower the protagonist even though all these movies close at a happy ending.
The character of Sunny in Mardani 2 is a recent addition to my list of well written and performed bad boy image
I felt he shares a similar body language and the same thought process as Gokul Pandit. It is exemplary to understand the character and portray it onscreen beautifully so that audiences can see glimpses of Gokul Pandit within Sunny. Both characters cannot picture a successful woman in their minds and live in the bubble of the male superiority. They think it is their responsibility to teach these women how to abide by the rules of womanhood set by society. Sunny is too busy with boosting his manly ego to the extent of not standing up to even his father who wronged his mother and killed her.
Another movie that stood out for me for the Negative character was Hacked. Rohan Shah has played the character of Vivek a 15 year old who is an obsessed lover of a woman who is much older than him. On the other
hand this woman only considers him as a friend but ends up complicating the situation by giving wrong signals, not on purpose. The story gears up and moves forward from here to see how cybercrime like hacking becomes a major tool for spoiling someone else’s life. As an audience, we all are very much aware of crimes like these but the narrative takes us through a different viewpoint of the same.
