Product placement refers to the practice of including a brand name, product or Signage or other trademark merchandise within a motion picture, television or other media vehicles for increasing the recognition of the brand in the market.
The makers even go to the extent of altering the script of the movies and daily soaps to accommodate the brands in their films and television series. This is done so that the audience could relate and interact with the brand more. It is usually mentioned in scenes or logos are inserted in the background and shots of the brand also taken to place it in the frame.
The product placement is preferred formula as the interaction between the brand and target audience is for a longer time. The marketers choose movies to give their commodity the desired limelight but the television industry proves to be more beneficial for them. The brand owners have the option to change the strategy so that the new planning works towards the betterment of the brand. Inclusion of brands in a daily soap is less costly than in films. Television also gives it the wider reach as it is easily available to more people in a negligible cost. Another benefit is that the daily soap air for 5 days each week.
In my opinion product placement is a good method for exposure of brands in daily soaps and movies but only when done right. Some movies like Baghban has over done it and this can be irritating for the consumers of the film in this case.
